Week 43 - Judith Mark Ivar

October 28, 2018 in 52 rolls project

Judith, Mark and Ivar are a happy little family. They came to visit us this week, so we decided to do a little portrait shoot. It is always a challenge to make photos of little kids. But after a minute Ivar already decided to laugh as best as he can.

52 Rolls
2018

Welcome to my 52 rolls project for 2018.
This project is very simple, yet very challenging. Shooting and developing at least one roll of film per week. Even in the weeks of creative drought.
And that's what it is all about. Keep on shooting, keep on making mistakes and learning from them. I'll post a blog every week here so you can keep track of all my shenanigans.

Week 52 - Finale
Dec 31, 2018

The last week of my 52 rolls project, this time with a Leica M6 that I loaned from a friend of mine. Just to see what all the fuzz is about. I’m thinking about going completely analog and sell my digital gear. Probably one of the new years resolutions for 2019. This is a collection of street geometry and some cat and girlfriend portraits. This 52 rolls project was so much fun to do! I learned a lot during the process. But I’m also glad this is the end. Now I can focus more on dark room work and some other projects. without a weekly deadline. I hope you enjoyed this project and I hope to see you soon in 2019!

Dec 23, 2018

One of the final weeks! It is a bit rainy over here in Amsterdam, so I took out my last roll of Ilford Delta 3200 and shot it in the Flevopark nearby. We came across some mushrooms growing on a tree, That became one of the hero pics of this week. Together with some closed-up geometric abstract organics or something. The sort of compositions my eye always falls on.

Because my go to portrait film is discontinued, I had to look for my new portrait film. After some information digging I went with Kodak T-Max 100. It has a slightly different grain structure and the tonality is not as soft as the former film. But! I dig this look. I also did some testing with the one light setup. And I can really create both soft and hard contrast looks with this film. Lotte was my model for this test. Check it out and let me know what you think!

This week I went on a photo walk with the local Hassy Gang. It is getting darker and darker here in Amsterdam, so I packed some Ilford Delta 3200 I still had stored in my fridge. I found out that I was gravitating towards birds in combination with lines. So there are a few here, with the characteristic grain of Delta 3200.

Dec 3, 2018

We went on a srprs.me weekend that was given to us by our lovely friends. A citytrip for which the destination is revealed on the day of departure. And we went to Milan in Italy, the fashion capital of Europe and maybe the world. I took my Hasselblad with me to shoot street, architecture and fun stuff with Lotte. Bellissima!

This week was a special one. All of a sudden I made the appointments with my family for a portrait shoot with grandpa and the youngest member of the family, Vik. The youngest and oldest together on film. I couldn’t wish for more! See how he lights up when he holds Vik.

This weeks roll was in a bit of a hurry. So I went to Amsterdam Central Station (to take the train after shooting this roll). I can really see these photos were taken in a hurry. Not a lot of keepers, exposure and composition was off at most of those photos. I’m also struggeling with water marks on my negatives. I have to get myself some distilled water for the next rolls.

I got the opportunity to do another portrait shoot. This time with the beautiful Dilem. She’s an actress, living in Rotterdam. I tested out some Kodak Tri-X 400 as a portrait film and I shot another roll of the beloved but disappearing Fuji Neopan Acros 100. The grain in the Tr-X shots is obviously more apparent, which can be a choice of style. For these shots I really like the cleanliness Neopan Acros gives me. It’s time to find a worthy successor, as this film is discontinued. by Fuji.

Week 44 - Berlin Teufelsberg

Berlin, on of those cities I will happily live in if I had to choose something outside of the Netherlands. We went on a trip to the Grünwald, a big forrest on the outskirts of Berlin. There you have the Teufelsberg (Devils mountain), an artificial made mountain on top of an old SS training centre. That mountain is made out of the Berlin rubble from the 2nd WW. On top of that is an old NSA spy centre that was active during the cold war to spy on the East. Now it is a creative spot with a lot of street art!

Go and have a look.
